Creative is the targeting now

September 22, 2026

For most of the last decade, paid social was a game of audience construction. Media buyers stacked interest clusters, excluded overlapping segments, and sliced lookalikes into percentages. The craft was in the targeting panel.

That craft is quietly being automated away. Meta's Advantage+ and Google's Performance Max both push advertisers toward broad targeting, because their delivery systems now find buyers better than a human ticking boxes. The platforms are explicit about it: give the algorithm room, and feed it strong creative.

What replaced the targeting panel

When targeting goes broad, the ad itself becomes the filter. The hook in the first three seconds determines who stops scrolling. The angle determines who keeps watching. The offer determines who clicks. The algorithm reads those signals — watch time, skips, saves, clicks — and finds more people who behave the same way.

In other words: your creative is now doing the job your audience settings used to do. A video that opens with a specific problem will find the people who have that problem. A video that opens with a joke will find the people who laugh at it.

What this means for how you work

The bottleneck moves from campaign setup to creative production. The teams that win are the ones that can generate more distinct angles, test them quickly, read the results honestly, and feed the winners back into the next batch.

That loop — discover, create, launch, measure, learn — is exactly what CORTEX is built around. Not because dashboards are fun, but because the creative is the targeting now, and the targeting never sleeps.
